Air Quality Monitoring Data

We are required under the Environment Act 1995 to review and assess the quality of air in the borough against the national air quality standards and objectives. This means that we have to monitor levels of certain pollutants. As in many other local authority areas the main pollutants of concern are nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine dust particles (PM10).

Diffusion Tubes

We use diffusion tubes to measure levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the air. These are small plastic tubes containing a chemical which, when exposed, measures the amount of NO2 (in micrograms of NO2 per cubic metre of air). The tubes are changed each month to provide average monthly levels. The NO2 measured is chiefly from road traffic although the tubes will pick up emissions from industry and background sources.  We currently have monitoring points at the following locations:

  • Near the Camrose Football Ground, Winchester Road, Basingstoke
  • Stocker Close, Basingstoke
  • Swan Street, Kingsclere
  • The Guru, Newbury Road, Headley
  • The Old Plough, Newbury Road, Headley

Air Quality Management Areas

Where there are areas of poor air quality, we have to declare an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). We do not currently have any air quality management areas in Basingstoke and Deane.

Environmental Permitting

We help improve air quality by also controlling and reducing emissions to atmosphere from industrial processes within the borough.
