Broadband in Basingstoke and Deane

Working Together to Improve Access

Broadband provides an always on, fast access to the internet that doesn’t tie up your telephone line.  It can be delivered via a cable connection, over the telephone line or by satellite or wireless, but there isn’t a standard solution which will work in all areas.  Some areas are able to use the broadband service offered by BT, whereas others are too remote and may need a wireless solution.

Local take up of ADSL Broadband within our Borough has increased significantly since July 2004 from 18.50% to 40.8% in December 2005 a significant increase of 120% in 17months. This surpass' the average within Hampshire which is 23.4%, and also exceeds the national average of 25%.

This reflects that the Borough is now 99.9% enabled through local BT Exchanges and that BT continues to work with the members of the eHampshire Forum in resolving issues within  communities experiencing reach problems or degradation in service, which interesting enough does not occur in rural areas as much as services within urban areas (apparently due to straighter copper wire and less chance of being tampered with).

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and eHampshire Forum are working in partnership to raise awareness of the benefits of broadband and to identify businesses and communities within the Borough that have broadband accessibility problems. To date 28 local businesses received broadband grants and support to help then get broadband.
