Launch of community safety patrols in step with the police
New ‘joined up’ community safety patrols hit the streets of the borough today (Friday 12 February).
The new service provided jointly by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council has a 16 strong team of Community Safety Patrol Officers on the streets of the borough.
The team will work closely with the community to identify and tackle local issues, reducing crime, deterring anti-social behaviour, dealing with ‘environmental’ crimes, to make residents feel safer and happier about their neighbourhood.
Working closely with the police, with daily combined briefing meetings and shared information through innovative use of technology, the Community Safety Patrol Officers can make effective use of enforcement powers to tackle offences such as graffiti, littering or dog fouling or confiscate alcohol from underage drinkers.
Based on an analysis of current anti-social behaviour and crime statistics, 11 areas will initially receive focused patrols with assigned officers. These areas are:
- Eastrop (Alan Wilkinson)
- Brookvale (Martin Lee)
- Buckskin (Ashley White)
- Brighton Hill (Richard Tozer)
- Norden (Matthew Swales Glasscoe)
- Popley East (David Mason)
- Popley West and Rooksdown (Sarah Ratcliff)
- South Ham (Paula James Bailey)
- Tadley, including Bishops Green (Daniel White)
- Winklebury (Kerri Littlefield)
Another six members of the team will work alongside the police to deal with issues across the rest of the borough as and when they arise, or to reinforce the presence in the key areas already identified,.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Development and Transport Cllr Clive Sanders said: “The thing that comes out as a top priority for residents is to be able to feel safe in their homes and when they go out. High visibility patrols have a huge impact on that. But in the past there has been confusion because of all the different patrols on the streets in Hampshire.
“That's why we consulted widely and as a result have created a new integrated team of Community Safety Patrol Officers so that residents can be confident that whoever they approach, their issues will be dealt with. This is ground breaking example of partnership, where Hampshire County Council has worked very closely with the Borough Council and the police to focus on making things better and more straightforward for the communities we all serve.”
The team works shifts, to ensure they are on patrol at the times anti-social behaviour is most likely to occur.
