Work and Qualifications  


Information is provided as a parish profile of those people aged 16-74, whether they are economically active or inactive, employed or unemployed and the average number of hours they work.  This information is provided for all people aged 16-74, and also for males and females separately.

They also provide data on the number of people employed according to their socio-economic classification. There is also data on the numbers of people aged between 16 and 74 with or without qualifications and the numbers of people with qualifications at a certain level. Finally, there is data on method of travel to work and average distance travelled to work.    

There are six tables giving data on Work and Qualifications. These tables are listed as ECONOMIC ACTIVITY, ECONOMIC ACTIVITY -  FEMALES, ECONOMIC ACTIVITY  - MALES, QUALIFICATIONS, SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASSIFICATION, and TRAVEL TO WORK.

There are footnotes below from the Office for National Statistics to assist with use and interpretation of these tables.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITY gives information on:-

  • The total number of all people aged 16-74
  • The number who are economically inactive

Of those who are economically active, the number of people who are:-

  • Employed
  • Unemployed

ECONOMIC ACTIVITY - FEMALES gives information on:-

  • The total number of females aged 16-74
  • The number who are economically inactive

Of those who are economically active, the number of people who are:-

  • Employed
  • Unemployed
  • The average (mean) hours worked

ECONOMIC ACTIVITY - MALES gives information on:- 

  • The total number of males aged 16-74 
  • The number who are economically inactive

Of those who are economically active, the number of people who are:-

  • Employed
  • Unemployed
  • The average (mean) hours worked

QUALIFICATIONS gives information on:-            

  • People with no qualifications/qualifications no higher than level 1
  • People with qualifications no higher than level 2
  • People with qualifications at level 3, 4 or 5

SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASSIFICATION gives information on:-

  • People in managerial and professional occupations
  • People in Intermediate occupations
  • People who are small employers and own-account workers
  • People in lower supervisory and technical occupations
  • People in Semi-routine and routine occupations
  • People who have never worked and the long term unemployed
  • People who have no socio- economic classification

TRAVEL TO WORK gives information on:-

The numbers of people who travel to work:-

  • By public transport
  • By motorcycle, car or van
  • By other means, or work at home
  • The average distance travelled to work

Cells in these tables have been randomly adjusted to avoid the release of confidential data.

Footnotes: (1) Does not include economically active full-time students. (2) Includes Agriculture; hunting and forestry; Fishing; Mining and quarrying; Manufacturing; Electricity; gas and water supply; and Construction (3) Includes Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles; Hotels and catering; Transport, storage and communication; Financial intermediation; Real estate, renting and business activities; Public administration and defence; Education; Health and social work; and Other.

(4) The highest level of qualification variable uses both the educational and vocational qualifications question; and the professional qualifications question. See below for more information. 5) NS-SeC stands for National Statistics Socio-economic Classification. (6) For long-term unemployed; year last worked is 1999 or earlier. (7) Not classified includes people who have not been coded; those who cannot be allocated to an NS-SeC category and all full-time students regardless of their economic activity.

(8) For the purposes of this table; public transport is defined as Underground; metro; light rail or tram; train; bus; minibus or coach. (9) Includes motorcycle, scooter or moped; driving a car or van; passenger in a car or van; and taxi or minicab. (10) Excludes working at home; no fixed place of work; working at offshore installation; working outside UK. (11) The distance travelled is a calculation of the straight line between the postcode of residence and postcode of workplace.

Further note on qualifications: In England and Wales, the highest level of qualification is derived from responses to both the educational and vocational qualifications question and the professional qualification question.   

Level 1: 1+ O level passes, 1+CSE/GCSE any grades, NVQ level 1, Foundation GNVQ.

Level 2: 5+ O level passes, 5+CSE`s (grade 1). 5+GSCE`s (grades A-C), School Certificate, 1+ A levels/AS levels, NVQ level 2, Intermediate GNVQ or equivalents.

Level 3: 2+ A levels, 4+ AS levels, Higher School Certificate, NVQ level 3, Advanced GNVQ or equivalents.

Level 4/5: First degree, Higher degree, NVQ levels 4 and 5, HNC, HND, Qualified Teacher Status, Qualified Medical Doctor, Qualified Dentist, Qualified Nurse, Midwife, Health Visitor or equivalents.
