International Day for Older People 2007 – What a Show !

To celebrate the International Day for Older People, the Basingstoke & Deane Over 55's Forum, in partnership with Age Concern, Anvil Arts, QMC and Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, hosted a special Variety Show, on Saturday 29 September 2007, at Queen Mary's College.

The event, which was a sell-out, was endorsed by a number of companies and organisations, many of whom kindly donated prizes for the raffle, which raised over £250 for the Over 55’s Forum.

It was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Basingstoke, Councillor George Hood, and featured many local groups, including the Basingstoke Academy of Dancing, the Oakridge Silver Singers, the Anvil Chorus and the Basingstoke Tappers.

The afternoon’s entertainment was topped off with a sing-a-long, lead by the local cabaret singer and singing coach, Jane Cole.

This spectacular event was energetically compered by Del-Boy look-a-like, Maurice Canham, who warmed up the audience with his chatter and much ad-libbing, and drew a lot of laughs from the crowd with his uncanny resemblance to the nation’s favourite cockney, from the BBC TV comedy Only Fools and Horses.

Councillor Cecilia Morrison closed the day with a short speech thanking all for attending and gave special thanks to the sponsors and participating organisations. Praise was also given to the Basingstoke and Deane Over 55s Forum for working with the many other organisations to make the event so successful.

It is proposed to arrange a similar event to celebrate the International Day for Older People 2008, on Saturday 29th September, and further information will be made available on this site in the near future.
