Some of the information provided here is in statistical or data form. We also provide website links to other sources of information for general historical research.
Mid Year Population Estimates 1982-2007
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) Mid Year Population Estimates provide an annual estimates of the resident population as at 30 June each year. The population estimates tell us how many people live in the UK as a whole and in each local area and provide information on age-sex structure of the population in these areas. The most authoritative population estimates come from the Census, which takes place every 10 years in the UK. Population estimates from the Census are updated each year to produce mid-year population estimates for the years in between Censuses.
The mid year population estimates date from 1982. Population data for the Borough is available for each year from 1982 by following the link the Hampshire County Council website at:

Basingstoke and Deane Conservation Area Appraisals and "Living Landscapes"
Basingstoke and Deane has a wealth of architectural heritage and historic landscapes. Information about the historic envrionment, landscape and architecture of certain areas can be found in the Council`s Conservation Area Appraisals which analyse the qualities or feature that are of special interest in each area, the historic development of that area and the contribution of open spaces and certain buildings or groups of buildings to the area. Each conservation area has its own appraisal document and accompanying map. Consequently, they form a detailed assessment of an area`s history and character.
Basingstoke and Deane`s Conservation Area Appraisals can be found at:

The Landscape Assessment Report was approved as Supplementary Planning Guidance in 2001. It comprises a landscape overview which describes the formative influences that have shaped the Borough and factors that may influence change in the future, together with more detailed descriptions of individual areas and key features that define the special landscape, historic, ecological and settlement character of the area. It therefore provides a detailed source of data at a very local level.
The Landscape Assessment, along with "Living Landscapes", the Council`s landscape and biodiversity strategy which also contains data about the area, can be found at:
