About the Indices of Deprivation 2004
The Indices of Deprivation combine a number of indicators, chosen to cover a range of economic, social and housing issues into a single deprivation score for each small area in England. The Indices are used widely to analyse patterns of deprivation, identify areas that would benefit from special initiatives or programmes and as a tool to determine eligibility for specific funding streams.
The 2004 Index was created at Lower Layer Super Output Area level (LSOA), of which there are 32,482 in England. The spreadsheets below contain data about the 104 LSOA`s in the Borough of Basingstoke and Deane. Ward names have also been added to help identify the parts of the Borough to which the data relates and rankings are based on all LSOA`s in England, giving a national context to the Borough data.
The Index has been constructed by the Social Disadvantage Research Centre at the University of Oxford. The source (Communities and Local Government (CLG), Indices of Deprivation 2004) must be fully acknowledged. CLG has announced that the Indices will be updated by the end of 2007.
Deprivation in Basingstoke and Deane
At Borough level, Basingstoke and Deane experiences relatively little deprivation and some of its areas rank among the least deprived in England. More than half the LSOA`s in the Borough fall within the least deprived 20% in England, 12 of them within the top 1% nationally.
The fact that the Borough experiences so little deprivation hightens the relative impact in the more deprived areas. Certain parts of the Borough experience higher levels of deprivation, especially in relation to the "Barriers to Housing and Services", "Education, Skills and Training" and "Crime" domains. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy provides further analysis of deprivation for certain wards in the Borough and contains an action plan "ensuring that by 2025, no-one living in Basingstoke and Deane is disadvantaged by where they live".
There is additional analysis of the Indices of Deprivation 2004 in A Profile of the Borough 2006.
