Facts and figures for your area

Summaries of various datasets and statistics and information available at Borough and more local level, and relevant website links, are presented below.

Neighbourhood statistics

Local level data from the Census and from other sources can be accessed through the Neighbourhood Statistics (NeSS) section of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) website.  There are four main search facilities on the NeSS homepage:-

Find Statistics for an area – Follow the instructions on the left of the NeSS homepage. This search allows you to find detailed statistics within specific geographical areas by local authority, ward, “New Deal for Communities area”, health authority, education authority, primary care organisation (PCT), parliamentary constituency, parish or postcode. This search also allows you to select Lower and Middle Layer Super Output Area data for the Borough (follow the link to Definitions if you want more information about ONS Output Area hierarchy).

To use this search, enter the name of the area (Step 1) and select the type of area/geography that name corresponds to (Step 2). The drop down arrow will reveal more options. Then click on “Search” (Step 3).

Neighbourhood summary – Follow the instructions on the right of the NeSS homepage. This search gives you a summary report for your local neighbourhood through a postcode search. To use this, enter the postcode of your area and click on “Search”.

View or download data by topic – click on this heading at the bottom of the NeSS home page for a list of datasets and indicators. Expand each heading to find the topic you need, select the topic and use the “Next” button to progress through the site.

Create a customised table, chart or map – click on this heading at the bottom of the NeSS home page for options to use an interactive map to access data for ready made areas or create an area of your own, or to begin to build customised charts of data for your particular needs. Use the “Next” button to progress through the site.

Labour market and economic activity

Labour market and economic data for local authority, ward or parliamentary constituency can be found on the Official Labour Market Statistics site, “NOMIS”.

Select “labour market profiles” from the home page to view summary statistics from a range of sources, giving you a packaged profile of data for your area. Or begin at the home page with the “Wizard Query” to access a full range of data for particular geographies including Super Output Area (follow the link to Definitions if you want to find out more about the ONS Output Area hierarchy), Borough, County, Region and UK.

Data for neighbourhood renewal (Data4NR)

The Data for Neighbourhood Renewal website gives you access to statistics on the population, deprivation, employment, education, health, housing, crime and liveability, diversity, disability, children and older people. The website signposts the datasets available for targeting, monitoring, priority setting and performance management at a neighbourhood level, including supporting the Local Area Agreement agenda. It also provides a series of analytical tools, including other links to many data sources and toolkits. The website now also signposts web-based Local Information Systems made available by other local councils which may be of use when researching further afield.
