Business rates (non domestic rates)

The rates payable by business across the country is based on the rateable value of the property and the nation multiplier (rate in £), both of which are set by central government.

The council is responsible for the billing and collection of the annual rates in accordance with the statutory instalment scheme.

The present economic climate means that some businesses are finding it more difficult to pay this bill, and others, and are therefore more likely to find that recovery action is taken in respect of overdue payments. The specialist business rate officers at the council provide expert advice on all related matters and can be contacted by telephone or letter, and can also arrange individual appointments with customers.

Some of the areas that we can offer advice on are:

  • Payment arrangements
  • Hardship relief
  • Charitable relief
  • Small business rate relief
  • Appeals against rateable values
  • Deferred payment of 2009/10 rates
