An overview of the council
The council serves a population of approximately 167,000 and in 2011/12 has approved budgets for:
- gross revenue expenditure of £104.2 million
- a capital programme of £11.9 million
- 560.7 full-time equivalents
Services provided by the council include:
- housing and benefits
- collection of council tax and business rates
- car parking
- community safety
- community support and development
- planning policy and major development projects
- building and development control
- support to public transport operators
- borough highways works
- waste collection, recycling and street cleansing
- environmental protection
- public conveniences
- cemeteries
- parks and open spaces, including allotments
- sport and recreation
- arts and heritage
- industrial and commercial property and town centre development
- elections
