A
Aerosol cans: Please place your empty aerosol cans in your green bin. The lids should be removed and the can should not be pierced or squashed. Aerosols containing products such as insecticides, oven cleaners, paints and automotive sprays – often marked with a skull and cross bones or a black cross on an orange background should be placed in your normal household waste bin for disposal.
Aluminium cans: Please place your cans in your green bin. Recycling one aluminium can saves enough energy to power a television for 3 hours.
Aluminium foil: This is made from a different metal alloy to aluminium cans and needs to be recycled separately. There are several aluminium foil bins around the Borough. Please click here for the Recycling Sites page. If you are unable to recycle your foil at one of these sites, it should be placed in your black rubbish bin.
Asbestos: Cement Bonded Asbestos can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Wade Road where it is disposed of in a controlled manner. More information on asbestos disposal is provided here. Please contact Hampshire County Council for further advice on 0845 603 5634 or e-mail waste.management@hants.gov.uk.

Batteries: Following the introduction of the Battery Recycling Directive, household batteries can now be taken to the following shops in Basingstoke where designated recycling points have been set up;

- Boots the Chemist, Chineham
- Boots the Chemist, The Malls
- Robert Dyas, The Malls
- Tesco Metro, The Malls
- Jessops Photographic, The Malls
- Debenhams, Festival Place
- Marks & Spencer, Festival Place
- Morrison's Supermarket, Worting Road
- PC World, Brighton Hill Retail Park
- J Sainsbury Supermarket, Hatch Warren (at the bring site)
- Mothercare, Hatch Warren
- ASDA Supermarket, Brighton Hill
- Boots the Chemist, Brighton Hill
- Homebase, Winchester Road
- Comet, Winchester Road
- J Sainsbury Supermarket, Mulfords Hill, Tadley (at the bring site)
Car batteries and household batteries can be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Wade Road. The site has a designated bin where all batteries should be placed. More information on the Battery Recycling available here
Bedding/blankets: A good general rule is that if it can fit in your washing machine, then it can be put into one of the textile banks in the Borough - click here for a list Alternatively, a local charity shop might be able to accept them or the Basingstoke Community Furniture Project is always looking for good quality household goods.
Bicycles: Bikes in good condition could be sold through websites such as e-Bay or by placing an advert in your local paper. Alternatively, you might want to freecycle it. This is a community network similar to e-Bay but does not involve any money.Please click here for more information.
Books: Books can be donated to charity shops or recycled at a number of book banks around the Borough.
Building waste: Small quantities (a car boot full) can be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Wade Road. If you have a larger amount, please consider hiring a skip. Car batteries: Car batteries can be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Wade Road.
Cardboard: This can be recycled through your green bin. If you have large items which won’t fit in your green bin, you can either place them out with your bin on the day of collection or recycle them at the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Wade Road. Please flatten or cut up big boxes first.
Catalogues: These can be recycled through your green bin. Please ensure they are clean, dry and loose.
Clinical waste: There is a special collection for clinical waste. Please contact the council on 01256 844844 for more information. Please do not dispose of clinical waste in your black rubbish bin.
Clothing: Good quality clothing can be sold on by charities who use the money to fund their activities. Clothing which is of a poorer quality may be recycled into industrial cleaning rags or stuffing for car upholsteries. Local charity shops will be happy to accept donations during opening hours. Alternatively please use one of the textile/clothing banks in the Borough. Over 70% of the world’s population use second hand clothes.
CDs/DVDs/videos: Local charities will be happy to accept these items which they will then sell through their shops. For a list, please click here. Alternatively, you may can recycle them via community networks similar to e-Bay, but does not involve money. Two such networks are Freecycle and Freegle,
Computers/IT equipment: Items which meet certain specifications may be reused and donated or sold to charities or community groups either here or overseas. Reboot Reading (0118 957 6800), Jaime’s Computer Club (023 8063 2198) and Computer Aid operate such schemes. Alternatively, you may wish to freecycle them. This is a community network similar to e-Bay, but does not involve money. For more information, please click here.
