Collection of electrical and electronic waste (WEEE)

WEEE collection trial has now finished.

During 2009/10, the borough council ran a trial collection service for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and domestic batteries. We teamed up with Hampshire company Midex Reverse Technologies Ltd for the year-long trial, which was designed to reduce the amount of waste we send for incineration. The trial also provided valuable information and statistics as we look for a long-term solution for recycling this waste.

WEEE is any redundant or waste electrical items with a plug or which used batteries, and includes your small domestic batteries: for a more detailed list please follow the link below. The collections covered approximately 48,000 properties within the borough and were carried out at regular intervals –  during July 2009, October 2009, February 2010 and June 2010.

In total, the trial has seen us collect and recycle more than 180 tonnes of your electrical items – a fantastic effort by residents! The council will be evaluating the trial, to see whether it might be possible to offer a permanent recycling collection for WEEE items.

What can I do with my waste electrical items now?

Please do not put any WEEE items into your green recycling bin. If you have WEEE items, you can recycle them free of charge at the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Wade Road, Basingstoke.

Please note that no trade/business waste can be taken to the HWRC.
