Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council

Census 2011

First Release

Having undergone all quality assurance processes, the first results from the 2011 Census were released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on 16 July 2012.

This was the initial phase of the first of four releases, providing population and household estimates (rounded to the nearest 100) for England and Wales and constituent regions, counties, London boroughs, districts and unitary authorities as at census day, 27 March 2011.
Supporting information was also published, including definitions for data and geography, methodology papers and packs which explain the quality assurance process.

Broadly, the rounded 2011 Census estimate of the overall resident population of Basingstoke and Deane is 167,800, representing an increase of nearly 10% since 2001.  This is just 500 higher than the estimated base population in HCC’s 2011-based Small Area Population Forecasts (SAPF) – a difference of only 0.3%.

Further data was published in September and October 2012, culminating on 23 November in the final phase of the first release, with the usually resident 2011 Census population and household estimates for output area geographies and wards.
Data from all phases of the first release in relation to Basingstoke and Deane, as well as other parts of Hampshire, can be accessed at:

The 'Population and household estimates fact file' accessible via this link provides selected figures from the 2011 Census unrounded population and household estimates for each local and unitary authority in England and Wales.  The fact file also includes 1991 and 2001 comparison figures, 2001-2011 percentage changes, and median age, together with 2011 Census response rates and internet response rates.  The figures and derived measures are provided in a single table, as well as in an interactive profile that summarises and presents information for a selected local authority, together with regional and national rankings.

In addition to the tables included, the interactive population pyramids first published on 16 July to help interpretation of the results have also been updated with the unrounded estimates published in the September release.

New interactive maps providing views of specific characteristics of each local and unitary authority in the context of surrounding areas are also available.  These characteristics include the population and household density of each area, and the change in population and number of households between 2001 and 2011.

On 22 October 2012, ONS released 2011 Census estimates of the number of people who have a second address outside of the local authority where they usually live in England and Wales.
