Commentary

The 2001 Census provides detailed information on commuting patterns throughout the country.  Until data from the 2011 Census starts to become available in stages from July 2012 onwards, the 2001 data remains the most recently published.

Confidence Levels

As the Census represents 100% coverage, there are no confidence issues in relation to the data or its interpretation.

Data

At the time of the 2001 Census, Basingstoke and Deane was the most self-contained district in Hampshire, providing jobs for 67% of its resident workforce within the area.  This represents a higher “self containment” ratio than any other Hampshire district, even exceeding that of the City of Southampton.

Basingstoke and Deane was a net exporter of labour in 2001, with 27,000 people commuting out of the borough to work and 24,000 commuting in.
