Commentary

Until data from the 2011 Census starts to become available after July 2012, the 2001 Census remains the most recently published source of data on household car and van ownership at local level.  This gives numbers and proportions of households who have access to cars or vans for personal use.

The Department for Transport (DfT) provides an annual snapshot of vehicle licensing statistics, but this is based on county councils and unitary authorities: no information is available at borough level.  The DfT vehicle licensing statistics can be found at:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/datatablespublications/vehicles/licensing/

Confidence Levels

There are no confidence issues in relation to the data and its interpretation.

"All cars or vans in household" refers to only those cars that are owned by, or available for use by, private households.

A quick analysis of ward level data in the borough shows that certain wards in the borough have a high percentage of households without access to their own transport.  Above the borough average are: Brighton Hill South (23%); Brookvale & Kings Furlong (26.98%); Buckskin (26.1%); Eastrop (23.1%); Norden (30.12%); Popley East (27.72%); Popley West (25.23%); Rooksdown (25.55%); South Ham (32.22%); Whitchurch (16.35%); and Winklebury (18.18%).

Time Series

The 2001 Census data can be compared with that for 1991.  Comparison of changes between these two Census years shows a distinct change in the profile of households in relation to car accessibility - the highest proportion of households now have access to two cars or more, compared to one car households being predominant in 1991.  The percentage of households with access to two or more cars has risen from 37.6% in 1991 to 43.7% in 2001, while the percentage of households without access to any car or van has decreased by 3% in between the Census years as has the percentage of households with access to only one car.
