Commentary
Data on distance travelled to work is available from the 2001 Census. It is "residence based" so identifies the distance travelled to work by the borough`s residents whether to work within or outside the borough. It is based on all people aged 16-74 who are in employment.
The distance travelled to work is measured in kilometres of a straight line between the residence postcode and the workplace postcode. It is not
calculated
for people working mainly at or from home, people with no fixed workplace, people working on an offshore installation, or people working outside the UK.
Confidence Levels
There are no confidence issues with the 2001 Census.
Data
As explained in the section on in and out commuting, a high proportion of the borough`s residents work within the borough. Not unsurprisingly therefore, the majority of Basingstoke and Deane residents make relatively short journeys to work. 42% of people who do travel to work make journeys of less than 5 kilometres. At the time of the Census this would relate to over 34,000 people. Taking into account those that work at or mainly at home (9.4%), 76% of people travel less than 20 kilometres to work.

Proportions and comparisons with the South East and county average can also be seen in the graph below. The borough has similar proportions of people working from home or travelling less than 2k to the Hampshire and South East average. However, the percentage of people travelling between 2 and 5K clearly exceeds that for the county and region.
