The 1991 Census recorded that 3.6% of people in Basingstoke and Deane travelled to work by train, 5.5% by bus or coach, over 61% as a car or van driver and 8.2% as a passenger; 3% cycled, 10.9% went on foot and 4.7% worked at, or mainly from, home.
The 2001 Census showed these proportions as remaining broadly the same, with the exception of people who worked at home, or mainly at home, doubling to 9.4%; those people who drive rising by 2.4%; those who travel by car as a passenger falling by 1.7%; and those who walk to work falling by 2.2%.
The number of people aged between 16 and 74 who are in employment stood at 82,628 at the time of the 2001 Census. Percentages for the borough are based on that figure.
Travel to work by car is by far the most popular method. Nearly 70% of people travel to work by car as a driver or passenger, very similar rates to the Hampshire average. About 10% travel by foot or bicycle. About 8% travel by public transport.
