- The health of people in Basingstoke and Deane is generally better than the England average. Deprivation is lower than average; however 4,195 children live in poverty. Life expectancy for both men (80.0 years) and women (82.9 years) is higher than the England averages of 78.3 and 82.3 years respectively.
- Life expectancy is 4.8 years lower for men and 4.4 years lower for women in the most deprived areas of Basingstoke and Deane than in the least deprived areas (based on the Slope Index of Inequality published on 5th January 2011).
- Over the last 10 years, all cause mortality rates have fallen. Early death rates from cancer and from heart disease and stroke have also fallen, and the latter is better than the England average.
- About 17.6% of Year 6 children are classified as obese. A higher than average percentage of pupils spend at least three hours each week on school sport. 80.2% of mothers initiate breast feeding and 13.6% of expectant mothers smoke during pregnancy.
- An estimated 21.9% of adults smoke and 23.9% are obese. There were 1,814 hospital stays for alcohol related harm in 2009/10, and there are 201 deaths from smoking each year.
