Commentary

The 2001 Census was the first to ask people to state their religion, and even then it was made clear that this question was not compulsory. Nearly 93% of the borough population did answer the question, a similar proportion to the county, regional and national averages.

Confidence Levels

There are no significant confidence issues with the data. In the borough, 93% of residents answered the question on religion.

Data

74% of borough residents stated their religion as Christian, slightly higher than the national and regional averages and slightly lower than the average for Hampshire.  A further 17% stated they had no religion, a higher percentage than the county or England and Wales as a whole, and marginally higher than the regional average. 1.7% stated that their religion was other than Christian.

Compared with the national and regional averages, Basingstoke and Deane has a much lower percentage of people following non-Christian religions in 2001, but higher than the Hampshire average.

Within the borough, the highest levels of non-Christian religion recorded in the Census were Muslim (0.5% compared to 3% nationally), and Hindu (0.4% compared with 1.1% nationally).

Ward level data can be found at: http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/browse/council-and-democracy/statistics-and-census-information/census-information/census2001. At Ward level, as with ethnicity, Rooksdown, stands out as the borough ward with the greatest diversity with over 2% Muslim and nearly 2% Hindu population.  Brookvale and Kings Furlong has the second highest percentage of residents stating their religion as other than Christian, with the Muslim population being strongly represented.

Time Series

There is no time-series data with which to compare the 2001 Census in terms of religion. With no official measure of the religion of the resident population in the UK until the next Census in 2011 it is difficult to predict how religious diversity has grown since 2001.  However, it is reasonable to assume that as the population becomes more cosmopolitan in terms of nationality and ethnicity, there will be correlation in terms of religious diversity.
