Following the New Homes Consultation, which ran from the end of October 2010 to mid-January 2011, the results are now available. During this time, the borough council received over 2,400 responses from a range of individuals, Parish Councils, local residents groups, service providers and developers or their agents. In addition, face to face surveys were undertaken with over 1,100 people across the whole borough, including a range of individuals in the rural and urban areas.
The main outcomes from the consultation have been included in a report that was considered by the members of the Planning and Infrastructure Overview and Scrutiny Committee of 17 February 2011, which can be viewed by clicking here. Some of the main outcomes of the questionnaire responses are that:
- 75% of respondents felt that enough homes had been built in their own local area;
- If new homes were to be built locally, there was more support for small family houses, houses for older people to live independently and affordable houses to buy, compared to apartments in either small, low rise buildings or larger buildings;
- 65% of respondents felt that continuing with the same level of housing development across the borough as built over the last 10 years would be 'too much'; and
- When asked about the means of accommodating new homes in the future, 59% of respondents favoured smaller developments across the whole borough with extensions to towns and villages and 37% favoured medium sized developments on the outskirts of Basingstoke.
Further, more detailed information on the main headlines is provided in the report to the Planning and Infrastructure Overview and Scrutiny Committee, however a detailed breakdown of the questionnaire responses is available by clicking on the spreadsheet below. The tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet are numbered 1-17a and correspond to the questionnaire questions.
In terms of the face to face survey, a copy of the market research report that was undertaken is available to download below as a PDF document.
The outcomes of the consultation will need to be taken into account with all the other pieces of information in our evidence base, in order to decide what is the right level of housing for the borough in the future.
