In 2006, Hampshire County Council commissioned a study of the accommodation needs and aspirations of Gypsies and Travellers housed or living on authorised or unauthorised sites across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. A separate Travelling Showpeople Accommodation Assessment was carried out for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in March 2008.

In 2010, the South East England Regional Assembly carried out a Single Issue Review into Gypsy and Traveller provision within the South East Region. An Examination in Public was held into the soundness of the review document in early 2010.  However following the Government's announcement of intent to abolish Regional Spatial Strategies on 27 May 2010, work on the Single Issue Review ceased, and the draft report was never completed. Following a Freedom of Information request the draft report was published and is available below to download.

The council is currently working to update the GTAA, as part of the LDF Evidence Base to establish the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers within Basingstoke and Deane, both now and in the future.
