In July 2008 the council adopted a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on Residential Parking Standards. This SPD supports Saved Policy A1 of the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Local Plan 1996-2011. The SPD provides information on residential parking standards and design guidance and applies to planning applications submitted on or after 1 September 2008. It replaces the residential element of the council’s Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) on Parking Standards (January 2003).

The SPD was adopted at the meeting of the Cabinet in September 2008 following public consultation on the proposals and came into effect for applications validated after 1 September 2008. The preparation of the SPD has been undertaken in accordance with the relevant regulations, in particular regulations 17, 18 and 19 of the Town and Country Planning (Local Development) (England) Regulations 2004. Consultation and community involvement have been undertaken in accordance with the minimum requirements of the Regulations and with the proposed engagement procedures within the Statement of Community Involvement (SCI).

Separate standards are available for non-residential developments.
