The Council and the North Hampshire Primary Care Trust are responsible for the control of certain infectious diseases, which must be notified to the Food and Safety Group without delay, usually by local GP’s. If a patient is a food handler and could pass on the disease, it may be necessary to exclude them from work to prevent its spread.
The Council is also involved in major infectious disease outbreaks. When a large outbreak occurs, the Food and Safety Group work with specialised doctors in the Primary Care Trust to find and isolate the source.
