The Borough Council has allocated £2.1 million to undertake environmental renewal schemes over a six year period, and a further £910,000 has been allocated between 2010/11 and 2012/13.

Areas already tackled include central Buckskin, South Ham extension, Osborne and Millard Closes, the area around the northern part of Norn Hill, the Normanton Road area of Oakridge, the Jersey and Guernsey Close and Abbey Road areas of Popley, the Quilter Road within Brighton Hill, Hangar Road in Tadley, and the Sycamore Way area of Winklebury.

In 2011/12, works are programmed to be undertaken within the Kenilworth Road area of Winklebury, and within the Packenham and Pittard Road part of Brookvale and Kings Furlong.

The environmental renewal schemes work focuses on land owned by the council, but where possible joint working is undertaken with other agencies such as Housing Associations and Hampshire County Council in order to deal with as many issues as possible.

The types of schemes that can be considered when undertaking environmental renewal are as follows:

  • enhancement of neglected areas by for example replacing fencing, benches and bins and by tidying up overgrown plant beds;
  • improvement of the layout of footpaths and removal of inappropriate steps;
  • removal of isolated grass and planted areas;
  • measures to reduce nuisance issues such as ball game playing;
  • the upgrading of open space and youth facilities;
  • providing community maintained gardens;
  • providing new link paths and infill lighting where needed; and
  • other similar types of scheme that are considered a priority by the residents in a particular neighbourhood.
