The council can arrange for businesses to have their commercial waste collected through its contractor. The charge depends on the amount of waste produced. Alternatively, you can find a private contractor.
The council will investigate all instances of fly tipping, build up of rubbish on business land or littering associated to business activities and will pursue through the courts where appropriate.
All businesses must ensure that they have a ‘trade waste contract’ to have their trade waste removed. This contract must be sufficient to meet your waste needs. Failure to have a ‘trade waste contract’ that meets your waste needs can result in a large fine up to £20,000.
Businesses have a duty to keep their land clean and tidy. Under the law, businesses must also ensure that litter and rubbish from their premises does not end up on the public highway. Businesses must also make sure that promotional material such as flyers and posters do not litter the public highway.
If you own, lease or otherwise control land with your business and are failing to keep it clean and tidy, the council will:
- Write to you to explain what is required by you under the law
- Visit you and provide advice/assistance in keeping the your land tidy
- If the situation fails to improve, the council will serve a notice on you, giving you 28 days to clean the area
- If after a period of 28 days the situation has not improved, action will be pursued through the courts
