Saturday 1 October 2011, Queen Mary’s College
To celebrate the International Day for Older People, the Basingstoke and Deane Over 55s Forum , once again held a Variety Show at Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke, featuring the talents of local artists.
The Mayor of Basingstoke & Deane, Councillor David Leeks opened the show welcomed Christopher Gee as our new compere for the day. Since Christopher first appeared on BBC TVs "Opportunity Knocks", his career has been as varied as the 100+ voices that he performs in his act. He soon had the audience of over 260 people rolling in the aisles, with his unique blend of original, quality, non-offensive comedy material and his uncanny impersonations.
The first act was the Testwood Community School Concert Bands who were really accomplished musicians and gave us a rousing start with a great selection of numbers, with numbers ranging from classical and military marching music to pop and film scores.
This was swiftly followed by the amazing Boyle O’Dowda Irish Dancers who quickly won the hearts of the audience with their exciting repertoire, especially the 4 year old girl who, despite coming to a halt, went on to complete the dance, to rapturous applause!
Park View Juniors impressed everyone, not only with their lovely voices but with the addition of signing in tune with the music. The children really gave their all in a performance which left some with tears in their eyes but with everyone showing their appreciation.
After a break for refreshments, there was time for Christopher Gee to entertain us with more impressions and comedy routines which soon had the tears rolling, from laughing so much. The final performance was by the Over 55’s own choir, the Carnival Chorus, who performed a variety of numbers, showing their full range of talent under their new tutor/conductor.
Following the raffle, the Mayor gave a closing speech in which he said how much he enjoyed the performances and thanked all the acts and the Basingstoke & Deane Over 55’s Forum for organising a successful event.
Our thanks go to the many local organisations for their generosity in donating the magnificent prizes which helped to raise over £300 towards the cost of the event.
