Supported Housing

What is supported housing?

Supported housing is accommodation provided for people who could benefit from support to sustain and manage their housing. People are offered accommodation on the understanding that they agree to engage with support to make sure they don’t lose their housing. The type of accommodation and level of support varies depending on the supported housing scheme or landlord and on each person’s support needs.

What kind of support is on offer?

Supported housing can offer help with any of the following:

  • day to day budgeting
  • learning living skills
  • engaging in employment, further education or training
  • accessing benefits
  • accessing advice, advocacy and liaison services
  • maintaining a safe and secure home
  • developing social and support networks
  • moving on to live independently

Who can be considered for supported housing?

You can be considered for supported housing if:

  • you are 16 to 65 years old
  • you are single
  • you have housing related support needs

And are experiencing any of the following:

  • homelessness
  • mental health problems
  • substance misuse
  • learning difficulties
  • domestic violence

How do you apply for supported housing?

If a person is interested in supported housing, they will need to see the supported housing co-ordinator at the council. Their contact number is 01256 845230.

What happens next?

The customer is invited to attend an interview with the supported housing co-ordinator at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

During the interview, the supported housing co-ordinator will ask detailed questions about the customers past and present situation to assess which schemes may be suitable, both in terms of the customer’s needs and the needs of other residents. An application/referral form will be completed during the interview.

The supported housing co-ordinator will take the completed referral form and present it to the Supported Housing Panel.  The panel members consider each application carefully. The schemes that are most suited to the customers needs will contact them directly to arrange an interview and carry out a risk assessment.

If the application is successful, a place in supported accommodation will be offered as soon as it is available.
