Olympic Torch Relay Update

The overnight stops for the Torch Relay have also been announced. Evening celebration events will be held in our area on the following dates in July 2012:

Portsmouth Sunday 15 July

Local Initiatives
The overall aims of the council and its partners are presented in the Olympic Strategy 'Going for Gold', which was adopted in 2008. Since then various initiatives have been progressed and many more are planned between now and 2013. One of the key initiatives is Five Gold Rings, launched in February 2010, which aims to encourage local community projects throughout the borough. Here are some of the other highlights linked to Going for Gold in Basingstoke and Deane:
- Over 40 schools in the borough are signed up to the Get Set Network giving them access to a range of resources for Olympic related activity
- Over 60 entries were received for the design a flower bed competition - the winning design will be planted in a prominent bed in Eastrop Park in the spring, just in time to celebrate the Olympics!
- Improvements to the Athletics Track and re-carpeting of the astroturf pitch at Down Grange have been completed
- Plans are underway to celebrate the passage of the Olympic Flame through Basingstoke on 11 July 2012
- Three local sports facilities have been registered as potential venues for Pre-Games Training Camps and enquiries have been received from three overseas teams
- Four local companies have won contracts to supply goods and services for the London 2012 games
- Events have been held to celebrate the 2 year and 1 year countdown to London 2012
- World Party in the Park in July 2011 was based on the Five Gold Rings concept of cultural activity from five continents, with plans for a further event in July 2012
