Our borough is fortunate to have a very strong sports community, which is often demonstrated in competition. Much support is given to the borough’s athletes and clubs in order to encourage individuals to reach their potential. As a result of this, many individuals have achieved National, International and even Olympic honours!

Support for athletes

SwimmerGrant aid

The borough council allocates £7,500 in grant aid each year to support the development of local sports men and women. The council is also working with local businesses to obtain support and sponsorship in order to enhance this valuable grants scheme. The Local Sports Council coordinates the scheme and distributes financial assistance to approximately 125 individuals each year. This funding assists with costs of training, travelling and equipment. Sports awards

A high profile awards ceremony is held each year to recognise the achievement of athletes, teams and clubs and the contribution of coaches, officials and volunteers. The Mayor also hosts an annual Civic Reception to recognise the potential of young athletes, volunteers and school teams. For more information, please visit our Sports Awards page.

Coaching courses

The borough council organises and subsidises sports education courses every Spring and Autumn, in order to develop the quality and quantity of local coaches and volunteers. Essential First Aid and Child Protection courses are available, in addition to others such as ‘Behaviour Management’ and ‘Equity in your coaching.’ For more information, please visit our Coaching and Education page

Coaching Bursaries 

The borough council provides funding for coaching bursaries to facilitate the development of the local voluntary sports workforce. The Local Sports Council administers the scheme which allows individuals to apply for funding to offset the cost of coaching, officiating and sports education courses. Basingstoke Rugby Club

Club Development 

The council’s sports development officers support local clubs to continually grow and develop. Clubs are encouraged to strive for excellence and are provided with assistance to achieve accreditation such as ‘Clubmark’. For more information, please visit our Coaching and Education page
