The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
These regulations are intended to help reduce the large number of lifting and other manual handling injuries which are very costly to employers.
Any hazardous handling operation should be avoided. If this is not possible, then employers must assess the dangers involved in each operation. They should reduce the risk of injury ‘as far as possible’ by mechanising the operation, breaking down the load etc.
The risk assessment should be written, unless it is very simple and can be recalled from memory.
