Gas Safety

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998

These Regulations place a number of duties on employers. These include:

(a) employers must take reasonable steps to ensure that the businesses they contract to do gas work are CORGI registered (reg.4)

(b) employers must maintain gas systems in places of work under their control in a safe condition (reg.35(1)).

The Regulations deal with the safe installation, maintenance and use of gas fittings, and apply to both domestic and commercial premises.

All gas appliances should be checked for safety by CORGI registered installers at least once a year. Records must be kept for inspection by the enforcing authority.

The lack of any written proof of arrangements for maintenance may make it difficult for employers to show that they had taken all reasonable steps to prevent a contravention of the Regulations.
