Access for all

shopmobility buggiesAccess for disabled people is a high priority for the Council. The Council is committed to ensuring that disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else and that the built environment is designed to be accessible for all users wherever possible. The Council has adopted the Access Policy which puts access at the heart of the planning and design process.  The Access Officer is the first point of contact for access issues for members of the public, employers and service providers as well as for Councillors and Council Officials.

To ensure that the views of disabled people are taken into account, the Council regularly consults with the Access Group of Basingstoke and Deane. Members of the Access Group have a personal interest in disability issued either because they have a disability themselves or because they know or work with disabled people. The Access Group is keen to welcome new
members, if you are interested in joining the Group contact the Access Officer as below.

Designing For Accessibility Guide 2006

designing for accessibility coverThe Council has produced the Designing For Accessibility Guide which gives guidance on the design of the built environment. This Guide is especially useful for architects, builders, planners and other professionals who have to ensure that the built environment is accessible to all.  The Shopmobility office in Church Street is a good example of how the design standards have been applied in practice. These standards have now been incorporated in the development of Basingtoke's new shopping and leisure centres.

Copies of the Guide are available to download below or by contacting the Access Officer, on 01256 845 593.
