Community Warden Scheme

The Basingstoke and Deane Community Warden Scheme have achieved a distinction in the national Warden Quality Standard.

This award of the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (NRU ODPM) places our Community Warden Scheme amongst the best warden schemes in the UK.

The Community Warden scheme is an important and exciting Council initiative directed and supported by a partnership comprising Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC), Kingfisher Housing Association, Sentinel Housing Group and Hampshire Constabulary. The Scheme is also supported by the Government Office for South East (GOSE).

The scheme seeks to improve the well-being of local residents and make their neighbourhoods cleaner, safer and more enjoyable place in which to live. The Implementation Plan set out three objectives for the scheme:

-  To help create safer communities;
-  To assist with environmental improvements
-  To contribute to community development

The management structure of the Community Warden Scheme is as follows:

- BDBC has full responsibility and accountability for managing the scheme and providing Human Resources and Logistic Support.
- The BDBC has appointed a designated Community Warden Scheme Manager who is assisted by a multi agency Steering Group.
- The Community Warden Scheme Manager reports to the Head of Community Protection and line-manages and supervises the Logistic Support Officer, 3 Senior Wardens and 16 Wardens.
- The role of the Community Wardens is that of a trusted friend, working at the grass roots and acting as the eyes and ears of the community, Council and other partner agencies. The Wardens are specially trained and uniformed and provide a visible presence in designated residential areas:
