A Place to be Proud of Awards 2008

What makes you proud?

Is there an individual or group that makes a real difference to your community?

The search is on to find people that make our borough a good place to live, work and visit.


Now’s your chance to make sure what they do is recognised by nominating them for a Place to be Proud of award 2008.

The awards are sponsored by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Festival Place, Gazette Newspapers and the Local Strategic Partnership and are organised by Destination Basingstoke.

First launched in 2003, the prestigious A Place to be Proud of Awards have gone from strength to strength and this year organisers are hoping for even more nominations.

Award categories

The closing date for nominations is 5pm Friday 18 April 2008.

This year the award categories are as follows:

Barclays CommercialArts and Culture Award

This category is for local artists, such as painters, sculptors, weavers, photographers and designers, or for cultural centres, such as theatres, concert arenas and playhouses, or for organisations that contribute to the artistic and cultural creativity in the community of Basingstoke and Deane.

WinterthurSchools and Education Award

This category is for the world of education in the community. This is for the people and places that inspire us to learn and may be a school or college, an individual teacher or lecturer or a pupil who has achieved in their given field.

Gazette NewspapersGood Citizen Award

This category is for an individual who has contributed their time and effort in making our community a better place to live and work.

TenonYoung Achiever Award

This category is for individuals under 21 years old who have shown real achievement, either in a hobby, such as singing, dancing and acting, in a sport, in enterprise, in raising money for charity or in doing something for their community.

Sentinel Housing GroupGood Neighbour Award

This category is to celebrate those people who are a good neighbour, caring about those who live around them and going out of their way to involve themselves in their community, making it a great place to live.

CORGIUnsung Hero Award

The Unsung Hero is an individual or a group of people who go above and beyond their role to make their community a great place to live and work but who are rarely recognised for what they do. This may be your local beat officer, street cleaner or a caretaker.

VitacressHealth and Care Award

This category is for individuals or organisations involved in keeping the borough healthy and for people and places dedicated to caring for people in our community. This could be a charity or a group of volunteers.

North Hampshire Hospital TrustBasingstoke Ambassador Award

This will be given to the person, organisation or team that represents the Basingstoke and Deane area to the outside community and really puts Basingstoke on the map. This could be a local group, a business, a team or an individual.
