Data Protection Scam

News from the Office of Fair Trading

Several businesses in the Borough have been contacted by a company calling itself ‘Data Protection Agency Services Ltd’ (or similar) with a request for £95 plus VAT to register under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998.

This company has been sending out urgent notices for payment. Information indicates that it is nothing to do with the Information Commissioners Office, which is responsible for the Data Protection Register.

The cost of joining the Data Protection Register is actually £35.00. If any business is in receipt of one of these letters, unless they really want to engage this organisation to undertake the notification registration on their behalf, they should ignore it.

If you are not registered and are concerned by any requests that you receive, you should contact the Information Commissioners Office, on 01625 545700. The Commission, based in Wilmslow, Cheshire, is responsible for both the Freedom of Information Act and the Data Protection Act.

To check whether you need to register you can undertake a self-assessment.
