The Mayor’s Charity Appeal
2008/2009
Each Mayor chooses charities to support with the proceeds of fund raising and donations during his or her year in office. These are the charities chosen by Cllr Hood.

Macmillan Cancer Support
Macmillan Cancer Support is dedicated to providing support to anyone affected by cancer. The organisation’s reach is not restricted to those who have been diagnosed with the illness, supporting friends, family and carers who will also be affected by cancer.
Support comes in many forms; providing clear information about living with cancer and access to experienced advisers who can give information about benefits and other financial help. There are also, of course, the famous Macmillan nurses, who along with doctors and other health care professionals, offer expert treatment from diagnosis, through treatment to aftercare.
A proportion of the funds raised from the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2008/2009 will be given to the Macmillan Hampshire Appeal that is raising money for more local Macmillan nurses, two of which will be based at the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke.

Naomi House
This very special place provides care and support for “good days…difficult days…and last days” through one-to-one nursing care in a homely environment. Each year over 300 life-limited children from across central Southern England and their families visit Naomi House in Winchester for respite, terminal and bereavement care. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, it costs around £2.5 million every year to keep this service running. In addition, the trust is working on an appeal to raise £12 million to build, equip and run jacksplace@naomihouse a new hospice for teenagers and young adults.

The local North Hampshire group meets three times a year at the Ark Centre, North Hampshire Hospital, and is keen to expand its numbers for the support and awareness meetings. If you would like to help out or serve on the committee please contact Linda Smith on 01256 313332 ext 4204.
