Planning Survey 2006

Every three years we are required, by the Government, to measure the level of satisfaction with the planning service amongst those who had applied for planning permission. This took place in 2006. A questionnaire was sent by post to 764 applicants and 41% were returned. In summary, the findings were:

Overall, 67% of applicants were satisfied with the planning service provided by the Council. The main issues concerned communication and keeping applicants informed of the progress of their application.

63% of applicants felt they were given the necessary help and advice they require. Those who had been granted permission were more likely to be satisfied (74%) than those who had not (36%).

67% had understood the reasons behind the decision on their application.

73% of applicants sought advice prior to submitting their proposal and many had amended their proposals as a result. 74% had found the advice useful.

The majority of applicants had used the Borough Council Building Control service and 89% of those who had used it were satisfied with it.

Only 22% of the sample said their application was referred to the Development Control Committee. 52% were satisfied with the process involved.

Applicants who have made more than one application over the last three years were asked if they felt that there was any change in the level of service that they received. 72% felt the service had stayed the same or improved.

The next survey will take place in 2009.
