The majority of public green space within Basingstoke is managed by the Borough Council’s Parks and Open Spaces team, as are pockets of land within the Borough’s other towns and villages. The physical maintenance work is carried out by the Council’s own staff.
From mid March to the end of October, the main grounds maintenance operation is grass cutting. The cutting frequency is once every 2 – 3 weeks, aiming for a high quality finish with cylinder machines. The grass is not collected and boxed off for environmental and financial reasons.
In parallel with the mowing, weeds in shrub
beds and planted areas are controlled during the same period. This is normally carried using sprayers containing herbicide mounted on quad bikes.
The winter programme takes care of operations such as :
- Pruning shrubs and hedges off footpaths and roads
- Reducing the height of shrubs, but only where necessary
- Edging turf back off footpaths when it encroaches
