Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is offering residents
the opportunity to buy
a cut-price Green Cone food waste digester or Green Johanna 'hot composter'.
Every year, Basingstoke and Deane residents throw away over 8,000 tonnes of food, most of which is unused. However some food waste, such as meat carcass, bones and plate scrapings will never be on the menu, so instead of putting this rubbish in your bin, you can now use a Green Cone or a Green Johanna!
The Green Cone is a food waste digester which has its base buried in the soil and this is where all the work takes place to ‘digest’ the food waste using heat and harmless bacteria, breaking it down to its natural components of carbon and water. It’s a natural process that relies on the heat from the sun, so the Green Cone needs to be placed in a sunny spot in your garden.
To find out more about how the Green Cone works, please see the download at the bottom of the page.
Please note:
- Customers purchasing a Green Cone will need to dig a hole approximately 600mm in diameter and 450mm deep as part of the installation to accommodate the in-ground food waste digestion chamber.
- Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council is unable to assist with the removal of any excess soil which, if necessary, can be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Wade Road Basingstoke.
- The Green Cone needs to be installed in a sunny spot in your garden and in soil that drains well. For more information on installation, please click here.
The Green Johanna is a 'hot composter' that can accept both green garden waste and food wastes. Designed to sit in a shady position in your garden, the Green Johanna's unique ventilation system enables the contents to reach significantly higher temperatures than traditional garden compost bins, breaking down waste faster as a result. The Green Johanna accepts all cooked and uncooked food waste, making a rich compost from household kitchen waste mixed together with organic garden material.
Please note:
- The Green Johanna does not require you to dig a hole for installation, it sits atop the ground in the same manner as a home composting bin.
- The Green Johanna is not supplied with a kitchen caddy; these are available at the time of purchase at a cost of £3.00 + VAT per caddy.
