The council will be providing fortnightly collections of garden waste from March until early December. The collection service is for grass cuttings, hedge clippings, leaves, flowers, weeds and other green garden waste.
This service has been developed to make it easy for residents to recycle their green garden waste. It gives you the opportunity to have your garden waste collected rather than filling your car and taking it to the household waste recycling centre. The service can also take items which may not compost easily at home, such as large amounts of grass cuttings, hedge clippings and tree trimmings.
The green garden material is composted locally to produce Pro-Grow, a high quality organic soil conditioner. More information on where you can purchase Pro-Grow soil conditioner is available below.
This year we are repeating the ‘Early Bird’ offer. Customers can get one free extra sack for each collection if they join the service before 8 March 2010, ie for each of the 19 scheduled collections you can have two sacks collected for £28.00. From 8 March 2010 the cost of the service will be £28.00 for one sack and £10.00 for each additional sack ordered.

Questions and Answers
Why is the council operating a green garden waste collection service?
The council cannot recycle green garden waste that is put in the black rubbish bins. This is a waste of natural resources and means we send more rubbish for incineration than we need to. We all need to recycle more and waste less.
Collecting green garden waste separately means that we can recycle it.
How will the service work?
For a fee the council will provide customers with a large, hard-wearing, reusable sack for the collection of their green garden waste.
As per last year, 19 fortnightly collections will be made during the peak growing season from March 2010 to early December 2010.
You can sign up at any time but to gain the full benefit please sign up before collections start on 21 March 2010.
Sack(s) should be placed where you normally leave your wheeled bin for collection and be available from 7am on your collection day.
The annual fee, payable in advance, is £28.00 for the collection of one sack. Additional sacks can be collected for £10.00 each.
Customers will be responsible for their own sacks. Lost or damaged sacks can be replaced,
on request, at a cost of £10.00 each.
I am a returning customer. Do I need to pay if I still have my sack?
Yes. The annual fee covers the cost of the 19 fortnightly collections. If you are a returning customer and are able to reuse your sack(s) from the previous collection period, you will still need to pay the annual fee. This will be £28.00 for the first sacks and £10.00 for each additional sack. If you require a new sack(s), please inform us when you sign up.
What can be collected through the green garden waste collection service?
All grass cuttings, cut flowers, hedge clippings, weeds, leaves, twigs, prunings and fruit fall should be placed in your sack.
Please note that any kitchen waste, including vegetable, fruit and
salad peelings, is not green garden waste and should not be put in
the sacks.
What happens if I put the wrong waste in my sack?
If you put the wrong waste in the sack it will not be collected.
What happens to the waste?
All garden waste collected will be composted locally to produce Pro-Grow, a high-quality organic soil conditioner.
Pro-Grow is available from any Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Hampshire. Pro-Grow can also be purchased and collected from the Little Bushey Warren composting site, either in 30 litre sacks at £2.04 each, or loose in a open trailer at £5.00 + VAT per cubic metre.
Alternatively bulk delivery can be arranged within a 20 mile radius of Winchester, for a quantity of 50 sacks (30 litre sacks). Outside this distance, there is a delivery charge of £10.00. Contact CPL Distribution on 0845 678 9955 to arrange delivery.
