Beacon Authority - Affordable Housing

Council shines to win national beacon status

The Beacon Council scheme was launched by the government to identify councils to act as centres of excellence and innovation in different services

beacon council logoThe prestigious national Beacon Status has been awarded to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, acknowledging it as an example for other councils across the country in providing affordable housing.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is one of only four authorities to win the coveted recognition of excellence in affordable housing in England.

The status means that the council will be working together with the government and the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) to share their knowledge and expertise in the housing field.

This is the first time that the council has been awarded beacon status in its own right, as it was previously part of a Hampshire partnership – Project Integra – which won beacon status for waste management.

The other councils to be awarded Beacon status in affordable housing are:

  • East Hants District Council
  • London Borough of Greenwich
  • South Hams District Council
