The council is asking for your views on architects’ options for creating a 'new look' for The Malls shopping centre.
The aim is to create a modern open-air shopping centre with attractive public areas, as well as providing a more welcoming entrance to the town from the station.
We would like to hear your views on the possible design options, including replacing the ‘overhangs’ and suggestions for different types of ‘focal point’ for Castle Square.
The options will also include changes to the public areas, with proposals for planting, paving, signage, seating areas and improved lighting to make the area look much brighter.
Why are we doing this?
The council drew up a ‘masterplan’ called the Central Area Vision to ensure the future vitality and viability of the town centre. This envisages a different ‘feel’ for each area of the town centre, which all fit together and are easy to access.
Recent consultation to develop this vision showed that people felt The Malls was one of the areas most in need of improvement so that it complements the successful Festival Place.
