The Basingstoke Water Cycle Study has been commissioned from consultants Halcrow on behalf of the Water Cycle Study Steering Group.
The Steering Group is a partnership comprising representatives of the following organisations:
- Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council
- The Environment Agency
- Hampshire County Council
- Thames Water
- Southern Water
- Natural England
- South East Water
The purpose of the study is to examine the potential impacts of future growth at Basingstoke on three main aspects of the water cycle:
- Water resources - increased demand for water and the infrastructure to distribute it
- Water quality - increased generation of sewerage and other waste water, requiring collection and treatment systems. Increased risk to the quality of the water environment including its ecology
- Flood risk - increased waste water or run-off could increase risks of flooding
The report is intended to provide information for the Examination in Public into the South East Regional Spatial Strategy (the South East Plan) and the development of the Basingstoke & Deane Core Strategy which will be central to the Borough’s Local Development Framework.
Phase 1 of the study is now complete. This phase assessed the strategic capacity to accommodate development in Basingstoke. Phase 2 of the study and a strategic flood risk assessment are required to before firm conclusions can be made regarding the level of new development that can be accommodated in Basingstoke and Deane, and how and where this could be achieved.
