Travel Plans

A travel plan is a travel management strategy for a site, group of sites or organisation. It contains a package of measures designed to offer a choice of travel modes and encourage travelling in a more sustainable way.

A travel plan will usually focus on reducing the number of single occupant car trips to or from a site, however, it can also assist in the wider aims of improving health, and reducing congestion and pollution.

Examples of travel plan objectives will include:-

- Encouraging walking and cycling
- Reducing the need to travel
- Facilitating car sharing
- Promoting and improving public transport

Across the Borough, some 40 travel plans have been developed to date. Many of these have provided practical solutions to transport issues which organisations have faced. The number of travel plans being developed is increasing all the time and we are on target to exceed the aim of having 15% of employees within the Borough covered by a travel plan by 2011.

We can provide advice and guidance on developing a travel plan for your organisation, whether this be as part of a planning requirement or on a voluntary basis. For further information please telephone 01256 845256 or email ian.robertson@basingstoke.gov.uk

Please note, all travel plans covering schools are managed by Hampshire County Council.
