Trees

Trees form an invaluable resource, making a significant contribution to our environment.

Across the borough there are many trees owned privately, which enhance the amenity value of both urban and rural areas. Some of these trees are important local landmarks, others serve to soften and enhance built-up areas. Trees can also help to add instant maturity to new developments, or screen less attractive buildings like industrial units.

The tree service maintains and enhances the quality of trees across the borough. It encourages management of privately owned trees, woodlands and hedgerows and raises landowners' awareness of their responsibilities.

The council has a number of mechanisms allowing us to perform our function effectively and responsibly. It has statutory powers under the Town & Country Planning Act, to preserve significant trees. Other responsibilities help to ensure the protection of trees on development sites.
