Road Safety
The Borough Council is not the Highway Authority and therefore is not
responsible for road accident prevention / investigation or road safety education. Responsibility for road safety in Hampshire lies with the County Council.

Traffic Calming
The Council acts as agents for the County Council (as Highway Authority) for traffic management issues. In conjunction with the Police, the Borough Council investigates complaints received relating to traffic matters. Officers endeavour to find suitable solutions to identified problems, such as traffic congestion, parking and speeding vehicles. Possible solutions might include:
- deploying speed limit reminder or 'kill your speed' signs
- providing new signage
- implementing speed reducing measures
- providing parking controls
- introducing lower speed limits
In addition to funding made available by the County Council, the Borough Council also directly funds traffic management projects. The Council is in the process of reviewing its '“streets for people, roads for cars” policy, which aims to improve the quality of life of local people by reducing traffic speeds and improving the safety of residential roads in both urban and rural areas.
