Maintenance of street lighting
The
County Council maintains more than 140,000 street lights and illuminated signs throughout Hampshire. They also maintain some street lighting for the Borough Council that is not on the public highway.
Within Basingstoke there are a number of people (referred to as 'scouts') checking that the street lighting and illuminated street furniture is working. When the 'scout' finds a fault it is reported and repaired within a prescribed timescale. Sometimes faults are not always found by a 'scout' so it is helpful if the public inform the County Council of these.
To report a fault
Prior to reporting the fault, please check the defective streetlight for it's reference number. This is usually fixed to the column 5 to 6 feet above ground. Also find out the road name in which the streetlight is situated. (If the street light has a series of alpha/numeric characters beneath the number itself then please also use these when reporting the fault).
Telephone 0800 506060 and you will be put through to a answering service where you can leave a message detailing the street name, street light number and the type of fault; or alternatively, you can report any faulty or defective street light using the following link
Hampshire County Council’s online form
Both systems are checked daily for any messages detailing faults and the faults are entered onto the SLIMS system.
New street lighting
The Borough Council makes funds available for the provision of additional street lighting up to the value of £10,000.
The Council has adopted assessment criteria for prioritising requests for new street lighting, which places an emphasis on the need to address locations where there are known crime problems or a perception of crime. New requests are investigated using the approved criteria and added to the rolling programme for implementation as funding becomes available.
Detailes of schemes which exceed £10,000 in value are passed to Hampshire County Council for consideration as part of their street lighting maintenence programme.
