Introduction
The overall aim of this grant scheme is to involve communities in the improvement of their local area, thereby fostering an understanding and appreciation of the environment and creating a sense of pride in that locality.
The POPPI scheme replaces the Environment and Regeneration Grant Scheme (ERG) and operates on a two tier system accomodating both larger and small projects. The aim of large projects will be on creating a greater impact on the environment and on attracting partnership funding. However the scheme will continue to grant aid the smaller, individual projects that have traditionally been supported under the ERG.
Who can apply?
Applications are open to anyone wanting to engage the community in improving the environment anywhere in the Borough. The Council is happy to consider more than one application in a single financial year.
What projects are eligible?
The two tier system has been introduced to accommodate both large and small projects. Tier 1 projects will include larger schemes which the Council would expect to be also supported by partnership funding from applicants and other grant aid sources. Tier 2 projects will be for the smaller schemes and would generally require partnership funding solely from applicants.
In any one year the Council will normally grant aid one large project up to £20,000. A minimum of £30,000 will be set aside for smaller projects, generally up to a maximum of £2,000 each.
Large projects may include:
- Under-grounding of intrusive overhead cabling
- Town or village centre improvements
- Comprehensive repair and enhancement of shop fronts
- Repair / restoration of an historic building, area, or special feature
- The creation of a new amenity space
- The provision of public art
- An interpretative exhibition or information to accompany an aspect of environmental improvement
as an integral part of a scheme
The following list identifies small projects that may be eligible, but it is not exhaustive:
- New shrub, bulb, or tree planting
A new seat / bus shelter
Installation of an environment interpretation board next to a local feature of interest
Creation of paths, walks, or paving
Improvement of shop forecourts
Provision of railings, fences, walls, or gates
Improvements to historic features
Reclamation of spoiled areas
