Help with finding an answer

Our "Find an answer" system searches through over 500 of our most frequently asked questions to help answer yours. Simply type a few relevant words into the search box and press the Search button. The matching questions will then be listed with the best match at the top.

Refining your search

Some searches may return too many results, or your choice of words may not put the most relevant at the top. In this case there are some advanced tips you can use to apply tighter control to the search. For the following examples the [ text in square brackets ] is used to denote what you will type into the search box.

Searching for [ recycle bin ] will match any question that contains one or both of those words. That could be a lot of questions.

Include all words

To insist that the matches contain all of the words, rather than any of the words, please tick the "Include all words" box before pressing the Search button. This will reduce the number of matches returned.

+ word

You can choose which words must be present by adding a plus "+" before the word. So [ +recycle bin ] will mean that the matches must contain the word 'recycle' and may also contain the word 'bin'. Those that contain both will be higher up the result list.

- word

You can do the opposite and remove matches that contain a word by putting a minus "-" before the word. So [ bin -refuse ] will mean that questions containing the word 'refuse' will not be listed.

"quoted phrase"

If your search is more specific then you can put quote marks around words so that they are treated as a phrase. Only questions that contain that exact phrase will be returned. So [ "recycle bin" ] will return more specific results than [ recycle bin ].
