Annual Household Canvass - Electoral Register

We have received concerns from residents about the emails that have been sent out for the canvass.

We can reassure you that we have been working closely with the Electoral Commission and the Cabinet Office on this new approach which is data compliant and reduces the amount of paper we send out. Residents who have received an email, have done so because when they first registered to vote, they consented to receiving electoral registration information by email. If you do not wish to respond online using the email you have received, we will be sending a paper form to you in early September.

Every year, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council contacts all properties in the borough to check who is eligible to register to vote and ensure our Electoral Register is up to date. We are required by law, to contact every household to obtain and confirm the names of residents.

For 2020, the annual Canvass process has changed to make it easier and more efficient for you to respond.

What will I receive?

Properties will be contacted by email, if we hold an email address for you or by post in August 2020.

If you receive an email from us (Basingstoke and Deane Electoral Services) with 'Do Not Delete - You need to respond. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council are updating the electoral register' as the subject then you will need to confirm your details on the household response website.

Please use the security codes provided in your email and follow the instructions in the email to respond.

If you do not receive an email, you will receive a paper form in the post with your electoral registration details on it. The form will explain what the next steps are.

How do I respond?

Please make sure you are following the instructions on your form or email.

You can respond in a number of ways, including online by visiting the Household response website or if your form comes with a pre-paid envelope, you can return it by post.

Please note - the return envelopes will be addressed to our partners Civica Election Services, London, N81 1ER. Due to COVID-19, we are minimising the handling of returned envelopes by our internal staff. Your personal information will only be accessed and processed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

You can minimise the risk further by responding online by visiting the Household response website.
